The ABCDE’s of Moles

What exactly is a mole? Typically a harmless skin growth, moles may be flat or raised. They can be irregular or symmetrical in shape. Most moles are a shade of brown or tan, but others run toward pink or red. Moles are caused by an overgrowth of pigment- producing cells, and most appear during childhood or adolescence. Adults—especially those with fair skin–may get new moles, often as a result of genetics, ultraviolet radiation exposure, or a weakened immune system. Though most moles are benign, it’s important to watch them for signs of melanoma. The American Cancer Society advises that you use their “ABCDE Rule” when checking your moles. Be on the watch for:

• Asymmetry – One half of the mole appears different than the other half.
• Border – The mole’s edges are blurry, irregular, or jagged.
• Color – Rather than a uniform color, the mole has a blend of colors, or patches of red, white, pink, or blue.
• Diameter – The mole is larger than a pencil eraser, about 6mm or ¼ inch.
• Evolving – The mole alters in shape, size, or color.
